I just finished playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and was truly inspired. This video game may not mean much to most, but it was made by a small dev team of fewer than 30 people. So, why does that matter? Why should this be a source of inspiration?
Because, like any great art, it proves that when there is a will, there is a way.
Guillaume, the creative director and co-owner of Sandfall Interactive, started this as a solo project. Burnt out from the daily grind of mobile game development, he decided to pursue something he was genuinely passionate about. He began posting on Reddit and asking for help with voice acting. That is where he met Jennifer, who would go on to co-write Expedition 33. Through more random posts on forums, he connected with Lorien, the composer behind one of the most beautiful game soundtracks in recent memory.
The whole thing feels like perfect serendipity.
Now, the game has sold 3.3 million copies and is being talked about as a game of the year contender by many. This is happening while the gaming industry continues to face mass layoffs, especially at the big studios. It just goes to show that a small team can still create something significant and sought-after.
I cannot wait to see what Sandfall creates next. Hopefully, it will inspire other creatives to pursue their passion projects, because it is still possible.
I feel the same way about the team at Slide Nine. We are small but mighty, and we use every skill and strength at our disposal to deliver great work for our clients. Passion, creativity, and collaboration will always go further than size alone.
