Why We Won't Send You Cheap Swag

As we’ve moved through the process of rebranding our agency, I’ve continually come back to — and wrestled with — the issue of branded swag.

As we’ve moved through the process of rebranding our agency, I’ve continually come back to — and wrestled with — the issue of branded swag. We’re a communications consulting firm; shouldn’t we have it all?

The answer is ‘no.’ Simply and resoundingly, no.

Our purpose is to foster meaningful understanding. If this is truly what drives us, if it’s what we promise to deliver to our client and ourselves, whatever we choose to adorn with our new brand must move us closer to that goal. And frankly, 500 plastic tumblers aren’t going to do it.

The U.S. promotional products industry is worth $24 billion and it won’t surprise you that much of what they produce ends up in landfills. These cheaply made products damage our environment and the drive for low cost creates terrible working conditions for factory employees.

So, what’s the solution? Stop buying junk en masse, slapping on a logo and giving it to people who don’t want it. Our leadership team has decided that any swag we purchase for our agency needs to be:

  • Meaningful
  • Well-made
  • Ethically-sourced/produced
  • Connected to our local community
